A staple in the community, the area that is now Baederwood Shoppes on the Fairway was once part of the Huntington Valley Country Club, as its golf course (hence “the Fairway”) extended down to where the shopping center sits today. Established in 1896, the Country Club purchased part of the Noble family estate for its clubhouse and golf course. This property was sold to the Baederwood Country club in 1928, and the Baederwood Shopping center was later built by the Heebner family.
Baederwood Shoppes on the Fairway is currently anchored by Whole Foods Market, but it originally opened in 1959 as an Acme. The store became a Super Saver in the 1970’s, and then a Fresh Fields in the last 1990’s. It was renamed Whole Foods in 2002, and opened its 15,000 square foot expansion in June of 2003, bringing a new community room, produce department and seafood department. The project also included a renovated bakery and a section for brick-oven pizza.
General Cinema Corporation opened a single screen theater on the property in the 1960’s, adding a second screen in 1972. Management changed hands a number of times and the cinema underwent renovations in the early 2000’s, reopening in December 2003 as the Baederwood Stadium 4, which ultimately closed in 2006. Today, this is the location of the current Planet Fitness.
